General The Operations Manager is responsible and accountable for the oversight of the department assigned including safety, production, quality, and employee supervision, training, and motivation. The Operations Manager is accountable to set a positive example in safety, attendance, punctuality, employee relations, quality, and work behavior.
Essential Duties Production and Quality
• Assures that production is completed according to required specifications and quality standards. • Communicates with Drafting Department to assure production has accurate drawings and information.
• Plans and maintains schedule to meet delivery deadlines. Determines required staffing, overtime, material needs, and equipment needs.
• Plans and coordinates with other departments to schedule raw materials, work to be performed by other departments, shipping, etc.
• Reports to the Partners or Project Manager any instances of nonconformance of quality, customer requirements, schedule, or safety. Works with the Production Manager, Project Manager, or other appropriate personnel to resolve issues.
• Recommends and implements changes to improve processes and reduce costs.
Safety
• Strives to maintain a safe and injury free work environment.
• Understands and complies with all 44 Iron Design safety policies and procedures and OSHA regulations.
• Ensures employees comply with all 44 Iron Design safety policies and procedures and OSHA regulations.
• Counsels and disciplines employees concerning safety violations.
• Conducts training for proper use of tools and equipment.
• Conducts regular safety training meetings.
• Ensures work areas are kept clean and organized.
• Completes documentation if an injury occurs.
• Assists with investigations of the causes of injuries or near misses within their department.
• Ensures tools and equipment are in good repair. Notifies maintenance to arrange repairs.
• Uses and maintains required personal protective equipment as outlined in the 44 Iron Design Safety Manual.
Employee Supervision, Training, and Motivation
• Trains, coaches, and directs the work of employees.
• Interviews prospective employees and makes hiring decision in consultation with Human Resources. • Performs skills test when necessary to determine skill level of prospective employees. • Determines staffing needs and sets work schedules of employees.
• Monitors attendance and punctuality and takes corrective action as needed.
• Conducts Employee Performance Reviews in a fair and consistent manner. Makes recommendations for compensation increases based on performance, attendance, skill level, experience, and safety.
• Counsels or disciplines employees to correct negative behavior, poor work performance, poor quality work, noncompliance with policies or procedures, or other issues affecting performance and productivity. Completes appropriate supporting documentation.
• Reinforces positive behavior and performance by employees.
• Addresses employee concerns and conflicts, consulting with Human Resources when needed.
• Terminates employees in consultation with Production Manager and Human Resources and completes supporting documents.
• Complies with all federal and state employment laws.
Qualification Requirements
• 5 years of steel fabrication experience minimum.
• Experience with employee relations, including hiring, training, discipline and termination.
• Knowledge of production planning and strategies.
• Ability to communicate effectively with employees, management, and contractors.
• Excellent knowledge of welding and fitting techniques, and overall product quality.
• Knowledge and clear understanding of Shop Detail Drawings.
• Knowledge of AISC Standards.
• Basic understanding of data entry.
• Intermediate computers skills with emphasis in Microsoft Office products. Experience with or ability to learn Tekla software.
• Knowledge and understanding of steel shapes, sizes of steel, and other products.
• Ability to read and use tape measure, and other measuring instruments.
• Ability to stand for extended periods up to four hours.
• Ability to sit for extended periods of up to four hours.
• Ability to occasionally reach, bend, stoop, and lift up to 10 pounds.
• Ability to pass a preemployment drug screen.
Working Conditions
• Temperature and humidity variances consistent with normal outdoor ranges. Climate control in the facilities is limited. May occasionally require working outdoors.
• Air contaminates such as smoke and dust may be present but are below the recognized TLV.
• The presence of electrical and compressed air sources.
• The presence of bottled gas and oxygen.
• The presence of chemicals.
• The presence of moving equipment, lift trucks or other vehicles.
• May be subject to cramped working conditions in some cases.
• Exposure to flying particles, hot metals, or molten metal.
• Exposure to light radiation from welding or plasma cutting.
• Exposure to sharp edges and points on steel and abrasive tools.
• Exposure to falling or rolling steel
